More Than “Just Ice”
Many people think Athletic Trainers simply tape ankles or hand out ice bags. In reality, Certified Athletic Trainers are highly educated healthcare professionals who specialize in preventing, diagnosing, treating, and rehabilitating injuries and medical conditions affecting active individuals.
Athletic Trainers provide:
- Immediate evaluation of injuries during practices and games
- Emergency care for serious injuries
- Concussion recognition and management
- Injury prevention programs
- Strengthening and rehabilitation exercises
- Return-to-play decision making
- Communication between athletes, parents, coaches, physicians, and physical therapists
Having an Athletic Trainer on-site often means an injury can be evaluated within minutes instead of waiting days for an appointment.
Why Athletic Trainers Matter
Sports participation provides tremendous benefits for young athletes, but injuries are an unfortunate part of competition. Having an Athletic Trainer available can make a significant difference—not only in how injuries are treated, but in preventing them from happening in the first place.
Research has shown that schools with Athletic Trainers experience:
- Significantly fewer severe ankle & knee injuries, including ACL injuries, when athletes participate in neuromuscular warm-up programs supervised by trained professionals.
- Earlier recognition of concussions, allowing athletes to receive prompt medical care and safely return to school and sports.
- Reduced healthcare costs by treating many injuries immediately on-site and preventing minor injuries from becoming more serious.
-
Athletic Trainers also play a critical role in identifying injuries that require physician evaluation and those that can be safely managed through rehabilitation.
Keeping Athletes Healthy All Season Long
An Athletic Trainer’s work begins long before the first whistle.
Throughout the year, Athletic Trainers help athletes by:
- Teaching proper warm-up and stretching techniques
- Identifying movement patterns that increase injury risk
- Monitoring recovery after practices and competitions
- Providing individualized rehabilitation plans
- Educating athletes on hydration, nutrition, sleep, and recovery
- Helping athletes return to competition safely—not simply as quickly as possible
Their goal isn’t just getting athletes back into the game—it’s helping them stay healthy for the entire season and beyond.
A Valuable Resource for Parents
Parents can feel confident knowing there’s a healthcare professional at school who understands sports injuries and can provide immediate guidance when an injury occurs.
Athletic Trainers communicate with families, physicians, coaches, and physical therapists to ensure each athlete receives coordinated care from the moment an injury happens until they’re safely back on the field.
